Easily Remove Powered By Shopify and Do This Instead

People ask this in Facebook groups, search it on Google and ask on forums like Reddit & Quora.

To be perfectly honest, I don’t really see the need to remove ‘powered by Shopify’ from the footer of your Shopify store but so many people ask, so here is a quick and easy tutorial on how to do it!

There are a couple of different methods to do this and some themes even give you the option to do it inside the theme editor itself.

If you’re new to Shopify then this might not be your priority, but it’s always handy to know how to remove ‘powered by Shopify’ from your store footer.

Read to the end and you’ll also see some nice examples of what you can do instead of having ‘powered by Shopify’ in your footer!

Remove Powered by Shopify by Editing Code

This might be kinda scary for some people. If it is, there are other options. But in order to remove the powered by Shopify using code, you need to follow these steps:

First, you need to go into Themes and then choose Edit Code from the Actions dropdown menu.

How To Edit Code in Shopify

Now you need to find the footer.liquid theme file under Sections from the list on the left. Click on it when you find it and then search in this theme file by pushing Ctrl+F or Command+F if you’re on a Mac.

You need to search for “powered” or “powered_by”, depending on your theme.

Edit Code to Remove Powered by Shopify

You need to delete the {{ powered_by_link }} piece of code, or perhaps even a larger amount of code depending on what theme you use.

In this example, I deleted the entire line of code from “<span” onwards.

You can see in the image above, Debutify theme actually uses their Shopify affiliate link in your footer which is kinda cheeky. This means that if people click that link and sign up to Shopify, Debutify will get paid an affiliate commission for referring that person.

With this method of removing powered by Shopify, there might be numerous pieces of code you need to delete. You can find them all by clicking the arrows next to the search box.

Make sure you click Save before you exit, and you’re all done.

Obviously, there are risks to this code editing method so be careful not to delete anything else.

Remove Powered by Shopify by Editing Languages

This method is slightly easier than the code method so it’s the one I recommend for most people.

You start in the same spot for this one by going into Themes. You need to choose Edit Languages however from the Actions dropdown menu.

How To Edit Languages in Shopify

Once inside the Languages section, simply search for “powered” and you should see a box that says “powered by Shopify“. Delete the text in this box, click save and you are done!

Remove Powered by Shopify By Editing Languages

Removing ‘powered by Shopify’ is easiest via the Edit Language method, but if this doesn’t always work then you may need to use the first method and edit your store code.

What To Do Instead of Powered by Shopify

Of course, you can just get rid of it completely, or you could put something fun or even a ‘hidden’ discount code.

Here’s some examples of what you could do instead of removing ‘powered by Shopify’ from your store footer:

Do Something Fun

I saw a Motorbike store put ‘Powered by High Octane Gas’ in their footer once. That was quite cool and you could tailor this message to suit your niche.

Offer a Discount Code

You could include a fun discount code right at the footer, just as a nice little treat for those that have ventured that far on your store.

Something like “You made it this far, you must really love us! Use code ‘VIP20’ for a 20% discount on our store if you purchase today”.

You never know, this might even convince them to make a purchase if they weren’t already going to.

Use Your Affiliate Link

You could try your hand at affiliate marketing and put your Shopify affiliate URL in the footer. This means keeping the “Powered by Shopify” text but inserting your affiliate link. You would need to use the Edit Code method above to do this.

If you’re wondering how you can become an affiliate for Shopify, you can check out the Shopify Partners page here.

And That’s a Wrap!

Now you know how you can remove ‘powered by Shopify’ from your store footer, or change it up and have some fun or earn a bit of extra cash!
